Catfish Species

General Information

There are nearly 3000 different species of catfish worldwide with North America being the home of 45 of these species.

Rightly named for their Barbels (whiskers) that resemble a cat, these fish are unique in that they lack scales and possess exceptional sensory organs.

 

 

We will examine the 3 most fished species in North America; the Channel Cat, the Blue Cat, and the Flathead Catfish. Knowing the different physical characteristics and behaviors of each will make you a more successful catfisherman.
